Honours Students: Potential honours projects in our lab are listed here, and will usually be kept up to date. Have a look at our current research and recent publications for an idea of how these projects fit in to other work we are doing in the lab.

Honours at Monash can start in either Semester, see more info here for School of Biological Sciences requirements for honours admission. I will usually only accept one new Honours student per year, and so prospective students will be expected to have a strong academic transcript, especially in third year genetics/evolution units. Please contact me well ahead of the deadline, and remember to attach your university transcript in your initial email to me.

Honours is an intense research year, and requires a significant commitment of time and energy – you will need to be motivated and ready dive in to a research project that you’re curious and excited about.

PhD Students: A PhD project should largely be driven by the student – backed by your supervisors guidance and support. So, this means your PhD needs to be something you are committed to and curious about. Any student I supervise will have the opportunity to design (with my guidance) a project suited to their own interests, within the broader themes of our lab. Possible areas include phylogenomics, biogeography, diversification, speciation, extinction, phylogeography, molecular evolution, comparative genomics, genome evolution and conservation.

If you are a motivated, high-achieving student who is interested in these themes, feel free to send me an email telling me a bit about yourself, your research interests and any previous research experience. Please remember to attach your academic transcripts and CV.

At Monash there are two annual domestic PhD scholarship rounds (closing May and October) and two international PhD scholarship rounds (closing March & August) – see details on how to apply here. As a minimum, you will need a clear First Class Honours (or Masters by Research) grade to be competitive for a PhD scholarship. I will usually only support up to one PhD applicant per round, so if you are interested in applying, please talk to me well ahead of the deadline.

Postdocs: I’m always happy to talk about the possibility of hosting early-career researchers and postdocs on independent fellowships (e.g. DECRA, Marie Curie, other international equivalents). If our interests overlap, and you feel you would benefit from my support, send me an email. If we have funding to employ postdocs for particular research projects (i.e. not supported by independent fellowships), these opportunities will be listed here, and advertised on the Monash careers website and social media.
